Polaris Products
Polaris offers products in four areas to meet the global demand for location-based applications. Polaris currently supports GSM, GPRS, and IS-136 TDMA with plans to offer UMTS and CDMA2000 products in the next 12-18 months.

Polaris provides a full Serving Mobile Location Center (SMLC) as the platform for its products.
A-GPS support components can be included if desired. Three software components installed on standard servers are required to operate Polaris WLS™ products. The products scale by simply adding standard servers or processors to support network expansion.

Public Safety
E911 - Polaris offers U.S. carriers a flexible product that meets the FCC E911 Phase II mandate and compliance requirements. It can be deployed on its own or in combination with existing network-based technologies or A-GPS.

E112 - Will Europe mandate a long-discussed public safety location application using E112 as the emergency call number? If so, Polaris is poised to deliver exactly what carriers need.

Location-based Services
The Polaris software-based Location-based Services product gives mobile operators a time-to-market and performance advantage. Its high degree of accuracy, especially in dense urban environments, and 100% yield, enable carriers to quickly launch new, reliable location-based services to generate revenue.

This product is ideal for mobile operators worldwide that offer customers location-based services such as traffic conditions, shopping and weather information, personal security and concierge services.

Network Optimization
The Polaris Network Optimization product creates location tags for call events, providing a valuable tool for improving network performance. Polaris technology can help avoid or postpone infrastructure investment, reduce maintenance costs and drive increased revenues with existing network assets. The Network Optimization product provides location information for every call, dropped call, handover failure, interference problem and other key events. This information is used to generate high-resolution traffic maps and performance optimization information in graphical format for RF performance engineers.

Zone Coverage
The Polaris Zone Coverage product outperforms other solutions in dense urban and indoor environments where line of sight is not always available. Clutter effects that cause problems for other network-based location products actually enrich the RF signature and help limit the search area. Zone Coverage can be effectively used to supplement existing solutions and improve location reliability and accuracy where it's needed most.

Core Product Components

The Wireless Location Signatures
(WLS) Location Engine

The WLS Location Engine processes location requests initiated by the handset user or services client. By comparing radio parameter values reported by the handset to those in the established database and using proprietary algorithms in a pattern matching approach, the Location Engine accurately determines handset location. Call events also can be location-tagged to help pinpoint areas requiring network optimization and facilitate efficient trouble shooting and traffic engineering.

The Predicted Signature Database
(PSD) Manager

The PSD Manager creates and maintains the database that maps the wireless network's RF environment according to terrain, clutter, buildings, frequency plan and field-measured signal strengths. The PSD Manager automatically updates the PSD during radio network changes to the frequency plan. It also tracks and reports PSD anomalies, triggering the use of the PSD Toolkit to refresh the database to maintain accuracy.

The Predicted Signature
Database Toolkit

When physical changes, such as new base stations or new buildings occur, then the Toolkit updates the network model (PSD) that serves as the foundation for ensuring location accuracy. The Toolkit is an offline environment used by network engineers to plan the location system deployment, test for accuracy and tune the model prior to updating the database.
